Almost 15 percent of the alloy's makeup is vanadium, which results in a remarkably high volume of vanadium carbides in its microstructure. This makes it a good substitute for solid carbide in industrial settings where complex tool designs need to be produced. These characteristics result in exceptional cutting performance and edge retention in knife blades.

By including CPM 15V in their limited-edition Sprint Run blades, Spyderco proudly leads the knife industry. These US-made models not only include this premium steel, but their blades are further enhanced by a unique heat-treating technique created by Shawn Houston, a well-known custom knife maker. This procedure is adjusted to provide the steel the highest possible edge retention and sharpness. This family of knives is further identified by their brown peel-ply-textured G-10, fiberglass-reinforced co-polymer (FRCP) or fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) scales, and the laser engraving of Shawn Houston's ‘Triple B’ emblem on the back of the blades.
