Levels are one of the easiest hand tools to use and give a quick indication of whether a surface is flat or plumb. At Lifestyle by Focus, we carry both spirit levels and laser levels.

Spirit Levels

Spirit levels are the most inexpensive and versatile type of level on the market. They consist of a ruler-like object with a clear window that allows the viewer to look into a clear vile filled with a special spirit. An air bubble in the vile moves as the level is shifted, with the air bubble staying perpendicular to the ground. When the bubble falls in the center of the vial, the surface is considered level. There are usually markings on the side of the vial to indicate where the center is to make reading the instrument even easier. Some levels have multiple vials and multiple windows to work with vertical or horizontal surfaces. Spirit levels do not require calibration.

Laser Levels

More advanced than a spirit level is the laser level. Laser levels work by casting a visible line across a surface indicating a point that is perpendicular to the ground. Laser levels are particularly useful when the user is trying to hang a series of objects such as picture frames or cabinets in a straight, level line. Most laser levels are battery operated and are designed to be dust and waterproof for versatility at the job site. Some models can also measure distances for added functionality. Laser levels may require calibration from time to time.
